You may have heard of Northstar and the important role we play in supporting students with disabilities in the Central Virginia area. What you may not know is just how transformative Northstar’s environment is for students like Derrick (name changed).

When Derrick came to Northstar, he had been struggling in middle school due to persistent bullying over his reading difficulties. Feeling isolated and discouraged, he had shut down in class, falling further behind. When he arrived at Northstar, something changed. Here, students uplift and support one another. 

When Derrick joined Northstar, everything began to change. Our supportive community helped him feel safe, understood, and accepted. Slowly his confidence returned, and he started making real progress.

Today, Derrick is thriving in reading and excelling in all his classes – and perhaps most importantly, he has friends! This transformation is at the heart of what we do at Northstar. With the number of students with disabilities growing in our area, the demand for Northstar’s services is greater than ever. To meet this need and continue providing the exceptional education and career development opportunities that students like Derrick deserve, we’re raising critical funds before December 31, 2024.
