Setting the course for graduation.

Upon admission, we work with our students to set goals for graduation, whatever that might look like for them. Milestones are personal, and we are there to help our students and their families successfully prepare for the transition to what’s next.

Students at Northstar have the ability to earn one of the following types of diplomas:

  • Advanced Studies
  • Standard
  • Applied Studies

Advanced Studies

Advanced Studies diplomas are awards based on a combination of completed coursework and 11th grade proficiency assessment scores. Student must complete a list of requirements including:

  • 26 standard credits
  • 3 years of world language
  • Virtual course credit
  • Career & Tech Ed credit
  • First Aid/CPR/AED training
  • Demonstrate the 5 C’s

Standard

Standard diplomas are awarded based on a combination of completed coursework and 9th grade proficiency assessment scores. Student must complete a list of requirements including:

  • 22 standard credits
  • Virtual course credit
  • Career & Tech Ed credit
  • First Aid/CPR/AED training
  • Demonstrate the 5 C’s

Applied Studies

Applied Studies diplomas are available for students identified as having a disability and meet the requirements of their IEP/IAP, but do not meet the criteria for a Standard or Advanced Studies diploma. Successful completion of IEP/IAP goals will in part satisfy graduation requirements.

All diploma requirements are established by the Virginia Department of Education. Full details and descriptions are available in the Student & Family Handbook.
