The Upper School years serve as a transition period in which the students develop intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally into an adult. During these last years of skill development, students prepare for life after Northstar and are supported throughout the process with a team of professionals to provide support and guidance.
Upper School Highlights
- Customized curriculum designed to emphasize character development, self-determination, and self-advocacy with an 8:1 student:teacher ratio
- Skill development focused on independent living, building job skills, and preparing for post-secondary education
- Individualized student schedules based on future goals and graduation requirements for Advanced, Standard, or Applied Studies diplomas
- College-bound students receive coaching for college study and admissions process
- Testing to receive Virginia’s CRC (Career Readiness Certificate)
- Partnership with GRASP (GReat Aspirations Scholarship Program) to help students develop a game plan for life after Northstar that matches their individual interests while helping overcome motivational and financial challenges
- A traditional school experience including: dances, clubs, Homecoming celebrations, performing arts events, no-cut basketball, field trips and other yearly traditions
- Beginning at age 16, students have the opportunity to participate in career training through the Career Center for half day sessions
Transition programming includes:
- Learning about the options available to young adults after graduation
- Exploring ways in which their unique skills can flourish in the world of work
- Developing a better understanding of their individual skills and strengths

Upper school students have a wide range of course offerings. Course selections are based on the student’s diploma path. In addition to the core subjects areas of History & Social Studies, Science, Mathematics and English, students may participate in the following electives.
